The İzmit Rehabilitation Center was built by the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation in the aftermath of the 1999 Marmara Earthquake to provide out-patient physical and psychological rehabilitation services to the victims of the earthquake and the region. As the first center of its kind, it was operated by the Mother Child Education Foundation for two years and then transferred to Kocaeli University. The Center partnered with Project Hope, a US based non-profit to provide health services and training to the Center’s medical staff. The services that the Center remains renowned for are: Orthotics-Prosthetics, Occupational Therapy, Swallowing and Speech Therapy. There is also a Children’s Rehabilitation Center situated within the complex. The Center covers an enclosed area of 1,500 m²  (16,145 ft2).
